CANADIAN GP – Hamilton takes another pole in Montreal from Rosberg
Lewis Hamilton has beaten his Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg to take pole position for Sunday’s Canadian Grand Prix. The world champion was .06 faster than his Mercedes team-mate in mixed conditions at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel will start third after failing to improve on his last run in Q3. It was tight for the top three with them all being within .1 of a second of each other. Daniel Ricciardo will start fourth after beating his team-mate narrowly. Max Verstappen made a mistake on his fastest hitting the wall on his last run.
Hamilton loves the circuit and he will be hoping he can close down Rosberg in the championship. The weather forecast will play to the Brits hand like a fortnight ago in Monaco.
Hamilton said: “It doesn’t matter how far you are ahead, as long as you’re ahead. Today I just didn’t have the pace I had yesterday, but clearly it was enough.”
“There was definitely more time in it but it was great to see how close we all were. It’s going to be interesting tomorrow but it’s the best place to start for sure.”
McLaren’s Fernando Alonso will start tenth out qualifying his team-mate Jenson Button who failed to get into Q3. Button was knocked out in a frantic final moments as other drivers managed to improve.
The session took place in mixed conditions with many drivers heading out early on in the session which was brought to an effect end by Manor’s Rio Haryanto who brushing the left of the car against the barriers.
Kevin Magnussen will start twenty second after an accident in P3 which required a new gearbox. He is to start from the back of the grid or most likely the pit lane.
Things didn’t get any better for the French manufacture after Jolyon Palmer made the same mistake when hit skidded across the grass but survived. Moments later he grazed the wall of champions. Another victim of the war was Carlos Sainz who was the first driver of the weekend to hit the wall bringing out the red flag after grinding down the wall.
Rio Haryanto spun his Manor in Q1 but marshals’ were able to recover the car without the red flag.
Kvyat and Ericsson have three-place grid penalties for causing collisions in Monaco and Magnussen takes a five-place drop after being forced to change gearbox as a result of his crash in FP3
