CANADIAN GP – Hamilton fastest fractionally from Vettel and Rosberg in P2
Lewis Hamilton was fractionally faster than Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel and team-mate Nico Rosberg in the second practice session for this weekends Canadian Grand Prix. Hamilton was .25 of a second faster than Rosberg while being half a second clear of Vettel.
Mercedes and Ferrari appear to be evenly match on pace on both the supersoft and ultrasoft tyres. But Hamilton also looked good on his race simulation runs which he was clearly faster than the other teams. This could put him contention for fifth victory in Montreal.
The second session normally gives the idea of where teams are going into the race on Sunday. However with rain forecast it could throw in a mix of uncertainty into the pecking order.
There was many change of lead during the session as drivers switched between the supersoft and then ultrasoft tyres.
Red Bull like in the first session was just behind with Max Verstappen finished fourth ahead of Daniel Ricciardo. McLarens Jenson Button had a difficult session missing most of the first half but still put in a encouraging seventh while his team-mate Fernando Alonso was tenth.
Riccardo told BBC News “I’ve always enjoyed driving around here. Bouncing over the kerbs, it’s a lot of fun. I don’t think we quite got everything out of it today but I think if we put it all together we can be pretty close with Ferrari. With the right lap, we can be ahead of them.”
The midfield looks very close with only a few tenths separating Valtteri Bottas in sixth from Daniil Kyvat’s Toro Rosso in fourteenth. Felipe Massa had a early shunt meaning he could only manage thirteenth.
There was no major on track dramas but many drivers had off track moments with button being the nearest to crashing into the wall.
