SPANISH GP – Rosberg fights off Hamilton to take victory in Barcelona

Nico Rosberg has taken his first victory of the 2015 after beating his Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton. Rosberg led Hamilton for much of the race in Barcelona while Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel finished third.

Hamilton did have to fight with Vettel through the race in order to stay ahead of the Ferrari. Ferrari has been fighting with Mercedes through the early part of the season to beat the 2014 champions. They hoped that the upgrades they had brought to this weekend’s race would of helped closed the gap.

However, Mercedes have appeared to have maintained the gap after bring their own updates. Ferraris other driver Kimi Raikkonen finished in fifth place. The Williams were ahead of Raikkonen until his former team-mate Felipe Massa made a pit stop in the closing stages of the race.

Spaniard Fernando Alonso who had been hoping to score his first points for McLaren this season was forced to retire after a brake problem that caused him to overshoot his pitstop as the jack mechanic leapt out of the way. The other Spaniard Carlos Sainz managed to score points after he finished in ninth place.

Rosberg said after the race that it had been “fantastic weekend. Everything worked out on Saturday and Sunday, it all came together. That still we are dominating in such a way is fantastic to see.

Hamilton retains his lead at the top of the drivers’ championship by twenty points from Rosberg. After the war last year there friendship has seemed to be repaired after Hamilton shook the German’s hand and clapped him on the back in recognition of a job well done.

The pair will battle again at their joint home race on the streets of Monte Carlo in a fortnight’s time.
