Renault have officially launched their return to Formula One today in Paris and confirmed that they have dropped the Venezuelan Pastor Maldonado. The French manufacture returns after leaving to sport as a works team in 2009.

The French car manufacture has set its eyes on returning to the top of the sport a decade after they last won a constructors championship. They completed their buyback of lotus in December.

Renault’s Chairman Carlos Ghosn says  “The team has been given the goal to be on podium within three years.”

Cyril Abiteboul, Renault Sport’s managing director, added: “We have to be realistic about 2016. In some areas we are playing catch-up – it’s no secret that we missed the start of the new power unit regulations and Enstone needs a bit of TLC.”

Abiteboul says 2016 is the team rebuilding year but says Renault hasn’t written off the 2016 season. He said Renault has to have a year to rebuild both the teams base in Enstone and prepare for improved success when the regulations change in 2017.

The team have kept lotus new signing the British Jolyon Palmer who told Sky Sports “It’s difficult to say at the moment [what the targets are] because we’re taking over from the Lotus team which were in a big mess at the end of last year.”

Former McLaren driver Kevin Magnussen will also return to the sport after Maldonado’s contract was ended when the Venezuelan’s backers fell behind with payments. He said yesterday “It’s come out of the blue a little bit, it’s been a bit of a surprise to be back with such a strong company, but I can’t wait to get back in the car.”
