BARCELONA TEST TWO DAY TWO – Ricciardo goes fastest breaking the unofficial lap record

Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo was fastest on the second day of the second pre-season test at the Circuit de Barcelona – Catalunya. The Australian set an eighteen zero on the hypersofts going ahead of Lewis Hamilton by three and a half tenths.

The lap by Ricciardo was set during the morning and was a second faster than the best lap set by Hamilton last week. The time is also the new unofficial lap record, while Ricciardo also lead on the number of laps by a single driver with one hundred and sixty-five.

Hamilton meanwhile dominated most of the morning. Sebastian Vettel was standing in for the unwell Kimi Raikkonen and managed third fastest a second and a half off the pace. Hamilton’s teammate Valtteri Bottas was third.

Though the German started off the day he could only finish fourth, Raikkonen returned to the cockpit for the afternoon going eighth fastest during his forty nine-lap stint.

Mercedes has been the outright leaders in terms of mileage throughout testing; again the team completed a hundred and seventy-five laps between them. However, the honours of being today’s leaders went to Renault with Carlos Sainz and Nico Hulkenberg managing one hundred and ninety laps.

It was another tough day for McLaren, an oil leak cost seven hours of track time. Fernando Alonso managing forty-seven laps in two hours, before his final run in the closing minutes was cut short because Sauber’s Charles Leclerc went off.

McLaren insisted they had no integration problems with their new Renault engines after their three failures on Monday, though executive director Zak Brown is due to speak to the media today.

Brendon Hartley managed a hundred and sixteen laps on his way to fifth fastest, setting his fastest time on the hypersoft in the closing quarter of an hour. However, the Kiwi suffered a small spin before lunch and his car had an electrical shutdown before lunch.

Renault split the driving between Carlos Sainz and Nico Hulkenberg, with the Spaniard seventh three-quarters of a second faster in seventh and Hulkenberg eleventh fastest.

Haas suffered an oil leak meaning the team were unable to complete a race simulation after lunch. That meant that Romain Grosjean was restricted to seventy-five laps.

Sergey Sirotkin completed seventy-seven laps on his final full day of testing, that was despite him stopping in the pit lane. The Russian and his teammate Lance Stroll will share the remaining two days with development driver Robert Kubica.

It was another quiet day for Sauber and Force India., Charles Leclerc going faster than his teammates best time by half a second. Esteban Ocon also passed a century of laps, although he was only 12th fastest in the Force India.
