Nico Rosberg was fastest on the final day of testing at the Red Bull Ring for Mercedes. The German was .8 seconds quicker than Ferrari test driver Esteban Gutierrez and Williams Valtteri Bottas.
Eight drivers completed over a 100 laps following a very heavily interrupted Tuesday when a four hour red flag caused delays. The only interruption was a brief spell of drizzle just before lunch the only interruption weather-wise.
Red Bull were on course for a trouble-free day until Daniel Ricciardo was force to stop with a hour remaining bringing out the red flag. However the Australian managed to return to track.
Gutierrez escaped without harm after going off the track before lunch. Bottas led the pace during the first session while doing aerodynamic testing in the morning before switching set-up work in the afternoon.
Bottas told Autosport “everything has worked as expected. It has been an interesting test, with the focus on collecting lots of data for the factory to have a better direction to push for.”
Mclaren tested new parts with Fernando Alonso more than 100 laps and achieving the seventh fastest time. Alonso lost some of the new parts during his crash during Sunday’s race.
DTM champion Marco Wittmann made his debut for Toro Rosso completing the most laps of anybody with 158, setting the fourth fastest time. Pascal Wehrlein slipped down following switch to Force India.
Jolyon Palmer was sixth quickest, with Sauber’s Felipe Nasr seventh
