Lewis Hamilton has won a dramatic season opener in Australia ahead of teammate Nico Rosberg continuing his brilliant defence of his world title. While Sebastian Vettel scored Ferrari’s first podium since last April in third.
Hamilton made a good start beating his team-mate to turn one but after just a few corners there was a crash between Kimi Raikkonen and the Louts of Pastor Maldonado bringing out the safety car. It didn’t get any better for Louts as there other car driven by Romain Grosjean retired on lap 1.
Hamilton made a brilliant get away on the restart pulling away from Rosberg to open up the gap. Sauber rookie Felipe Nasr made a move on Carlos Sainz to gain sixth place opening an opportunity for Kimi Raikkonen.
By lap seven there was only thirteen cars left in the race. Sergio Perez was sent into a spin after contact with his former team-mate Jenson Button spreading debris over the circuit. Vettel made a stop on lap twenty five while his team-mate Raikkonen got passed Marcus Ericsson.
Raikkonen’s next target was Max Verstappen on the run down to turn one making the pass easily aided by DRS. Ericsson made the same move on Perez the following lap.
Verstappen’s debut ended after spoke was came out of his Toro Rosso which looked to be a failure on the car. Raikkonen made another stop on lap 41 going on the hard tyre re-joining in fifth. But was forced to retire after a rear tyre wasn’t attached properly which means the team faces a punishment from the FIA for an unsafe release.
Ericson made a brilliant overtake on Sainz for eightieth place. But, Mercedes were unchallenged allowing Lewis Hamilton to take the victory in Albert Park.
